Waynes's Journey -
Wayne’s story is a compelling example of how UKSPF-funded support in Torbay helps individuals overcome complex barriers to employment. Through a holistic, person-centred approach, Eat That Frog supported Wayne’s journey from legal and health challenges to digital literacy and job readiness.
Background/Reason for Joining Eat That Frog
When Wayne first engaged with the Focus Forward programme at Eat That Frog in July 2024, he was facing an overwhelming combination of personal and practical challenges. His primary barriers to employment included ongoing legal issues stemming from a fraudulent mortgage situation involving his estranged wife, and the threat of losing the family home. These stressful circumstances significantly impacted his mental health, contributing to depression and anxiety.
Wayne had also been out of work for over a year, largely due to health complications related to diabetes, and was receiving limited work capability Universal Credit. His living situation was unstable, with difficulties involving his landlord prompting a search for new accommodation. On top of these hurdles, Wayne felt that his poor digital skills were holding him back from accessing vital services and progressing towards employment. His ultimate goal was clear: to improve his health and digital literacy to re-enter the workforce full time.
Support given by Eat That Frog
Due to Wayne’s financial limitations, his initial support sessions were held in Brixham Library, later moving to Eat That Frog’s Torquay Centre after he secured accommodation in the area. The Focus Forward team prioritised stabilising Wayne’s wellbeing by offering tailored guidance for both his physical and mental health needs, as well as his legal situation.
Wayne was signposted to various services including Talkworks and ‘What’s My Problem’, alongside legal aid via solicitors. His health concerns were supported through GP referrals, especially focusing on sleep and diabetes management. Recognising the need for emotional resilience, Wayne was referred to the Devon Clinic, where he began therapy sessions in January 2025.
Wayne also received targeted digital support, helping him resolve key access issues that had been limiting his ability to search for jobs and prepare for his court case. He was gifted a GeoBook laptop and received continuous one-to-one training in digital literacy. This included practical help with job searching, updating his CV, and navigating platforms like Indeed to improve his employability.
Outcome / Qualifications gained
Thanks to the holistic and compassionate support provided through the Focus Forward programme, Wayne’s outlook has significantly improved. Although he still faces some ongoing challenges, there have been marked improvements in both his mental and physical health. His increased mobility and move to a stable home in Torquay have contributed to his recovery, as has being closer to his family, which has helped reduce feelings of isolation.
Crucially, Wayne is now actively applying for roles in the hospitality sector—hand-delivering CVs and applying online with confidence. His ongoing sessions with the Devon Clinic have proven so beneficial that the clinic requested an extension, which Eat That Frog approved. His Focus Forward engagement has also been extended to ensure he continues to receive support through this critical period, especially around the stress linked to his upcoming court case.
Wayne’s journey is a powerful example of how dedicated, personalised support from Eat That Frog can be the turning point in someone’s life. Through trust, guidance and practical tools, Wayne is now back on the path to employment, better health, and a more secure future.
