Janette's Journey -

Background/Reason for Joining Eat That Frog

Janette is a dedicated carer for her husband and had been feeling somewhat isolated in her daily routine. In March 2025, she joined an Eat That Frog Multiply course at our Torquay centre, specifically the intervention focused on creating healthy, budget-friendly meals using a slow cooker. Although Janette was initially quiet and nervous throughout the two-day course, she expressed how much she had genuinely enjoyed it. With no formal qualifications in maths or any other subjects, Janette felt she needed help with managing her household budget and wanted to improve her maths skills in general.

However, she was hesitant to continue her learning journey, describing herself as “rubbish” at maths and doubting her own ability to succeed on future courses.

Support given by Eat That Frog

With gentle encouragement from the Eat That Frog team, Janette took a brave step and enrolled onto another course – a 10-hour bespoke curriculum centered around household budgeting and everyday maths. The supportive and inclusive environment helped Janette build her confidence and develop her skills at a pace that suited her. The course focused on practical maths skills including budgeting and calculating percentages to work out discounts. Janette demonstrated an impressive ability to quickly grasp these mathematical methods and apply them confidently to problem-solving activities.

The Eat That Frog team continued to encourage and support Janette, helping her recognise her natural aptitude for maths and ensuring that the learning remained accessible, relevant, and directly beneficial to her day-to-day life as a carer.

Outcome / Qualifications gained

Janette successfully completed one multiply course and with her newfound confidence and growing skill set, has now enrolled onto the longer course. She is eager to keep learning and is now working towards achieving a recognised maths qualification – something she would never have considered possible before joining Eat That Frog. Most significantly, Janette’s belief in her own abilities has transformed.

From thinking she was “no good” at maths, she has now discovered that she has a strong, innate understanding of mathematical concepts and is quick to learn and apply new methods. Her growing confidence has inspired her to look into volunteering opportunities, opening new doors that will bring more structure, purpose, and community connection into her life. Eat That Frog has been the catalyst for Janette’s journey of self-belief, personal growth, and social re-engagement.

Through our Multiply programme, Janette has not only gained practical skills but has also taken vital steps towards reducing isolation and building a more confident, independent future.

"I loved this programme, it helped me a lot with my maths and confidence with calculating weights and measurements."
