Henry's Journey -
Henry’s journey illustrates how UKSPF-funded employment support in Torbay helps individuals with learning and mental health challenges reconnect, grow, and thrive.
Background/Reason for Joining Eat That Frog
When Henry first came to Eat That Frog, he was experiencing significant challenges. He openly shared that he was feeling down and struggling with both his mental health and learning disabilities, including dyslexia. Everyday tasks such as using a computer felt overwhelming, and he found it difficult to connect with others or feel a sense of purpose. He was referred to the Focus Forward programme, seeking support to overcome these barriers and find a new path forward.
Support given by Eat That Frog
During a job search session at our Employability Hub, Henry disclosed his dyslexia. Aware that colour overlays can significantly help those experiencing Colour Vision Stress—a common trait for individuals with dyslexia—our staff suggested trialling the ssOverlay software. When the filter was set to pale blue, Henry immediately noticed a marked improvement in his ability to read the screen. Recognising the positive impact, we helped install the overlay on his personal laptop and a screen filter app on his smartphone, ensuring he had consistent support both in and out of the centre.
Henry also became an active participant in our Health and Wellbeing Hub, where he was introduced to simple but effective strategies to manage his wellbeing. Through guided sessions, he developed tools for self-care and built confidence in his ability to manage his mental health. He then joined our popular Uno Club, a welcoming social group within the programme, where he began forming meaningful friendships and social connections for the first time in a long while.
Outcome / Qualifications gained
The personal growth Henry experienced through Focus Forward has been life-changing. His involvement in the Uno Club led to an unexpected but inspiring opportunity—a local business owner invited him to volunteer at the Torbay Pride event. Henry embraced this role with enthusiasm and has already committed to supporting next year’s Pride as well as other upcoming community events.
He now describes the Focus Forward team as “a lovely bunch,” saying, “If it wasn’t for Focus Forward, I wouldn’t have signed up to Uno Club and been offered the volunteering role. If you make a small change, other doors open for you.”
Henry’s journey is a shining example of how the right support, delivered at the right time, can be the catalyst for transformation. From struggling with isolation and learning challenges, he has emerged as a confident, engaged, and active member of his community. His experience demonstrates the vital role that Eat That Frog’s Focus Forward programme plays in helping learners take that crucial first step toward a brighter future.
